Maxell has been selected by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for its JAXA-STEPS programme, a space technology demonstration initiative using small satellites to accelerate the development of future space technologies.
Through this joint research, Maxell will work with JAXA to develop and demonstrate high-heat-resistant all-solid-state batteries for satellite applications. The aim is to help reduce overall spacecraft weight and improve design flexibility by minimising the need for temperature control equipment.
Conventional liquid-based lithium-ion batteries used in satellites can face performance and safety limitations under extreme space temperatures. Maxell’s all-solid-state battery technology is designed to maintain high safety, stable output and long service life, even in high-temperature environments exceeding 100°C.
